SEO isn't dead. It's becoming Agentic:

Why Marketing Leaders need an Agentic Web Readiness Strategy

For nearly three decades, websites have been designed with one primary audience in mind: humans.

We optimized for clicks.

We optimized for conversions.

We optimized for search engines.

Today, a fourth audience has arrived.

AI agents.

Unlike traditional search engines that index pages or answer engines that summarize content, AI agents can browse websites, compare products, evaluate information and increasingly perform tasks on behalf of users.

This changes one of marketing's oldest assumptions.

Your next visitor may not be a human.

It may be an AI agent deciding whether your brand deserves to be recommended.

Several recent industry articles have highlighted this transition. Forbes argues that websites built exclusively for people must now also work for AI agents. Semrush describes the emergence of the Agentic Web and outlines a layered optimization approach beginning with technical SEO and extending to agent readiness. Wix similarly emphasizes that marketers—not only developers—must prepare websites for AI-driven interactions through structured content, APIs, conversion points and emerging protocols.

I believe these are important developments.

But I also believe we are missing one critical piece.

Marketing leaders need a measurable benchmark.

Today we can answer questions like:

  • What is our SEO visibility?
  • What is our Core Web Vitals score?
  • What is our Accessibility score?

But there is no widely adopted way to answer:

"How ready is our website for AI agents?"

That question inspired my latest research.

From Accessibility to Agentic Readiness

Over the past several months, I've been developing and testing an evolving research framework called the Agentic Web Readiness Index (AWRI). As part of that work, I evaluated nearly 100 enterprise IT websites to understand how prepared modern websites are for AI agents."

The framework evaluates websites across five dimensions:

  • Accessibility Foundation
  • AI Discoverability
  • Machine Readability
  • Content Intelligence
  • Technical Trust

AWRI is an evolving research initiative, not a formal industry standard. My objective is to contribute to the emerging conversation around Agentic Web Optimization by developing a transparent, evidence-based framework that practitioners can critique, refine, and improve over time.

Rather than measuring search rankings, the framework evaluates whether a website enables AI systems to:

  • discover information,
  • understand it correctly,
  • trust it,
  • and eventually act on it.

The underlying principle behind this work is simple:

Accessibility is becoming a strategic foundation for AI-ready digital experiences.

Accessibility has traditionally been viewed as a compliance initiative.

I think that perspective is changing.

Semantic HTML, meaningful headings, structured content, descriptive alternative text and accessible navigation don't only help people using assistive technologies.

They also help machines understand information more accurately.

The same design decisions that improve digital inclusion frequently improve machine interpretation.

Why this matters for marketers

Marketing teams have spent years optimizing the customer journey.

The Agentic Web introduces an entirely new participant in that journey.

AI agents increasingly influence:

  • product discovery,
  • vendor comparisons,
  • travel planning,
  • software evaluations,
  • shopping,
  • and customer support.

This means marketing success is no longer determined only by:

  • keyword rankings,
  • website traffic,
  • or click-through rates.

It increasingly depends on whether AI systems can confidently interpret your brand and complete tasks on behalf of customers.

That requires a broader optimization strategy than traditional SEO.

From SEO to Agentic Web Optimization

I don't believe Agentic Web Optimization replaces SEO.

Instead, it extends it.

Technical SEO remains the foundation.

Accessibility becomes a strategic asset.

Structured data becomes machine intelligence.

Content becomes an executable knowledge source.

Emerging protocols, APIs and agent-compatible experiences become new marketing infrastructure.

The question shifts from:

"Can Google crawl my website?"

to

"Can AI agents discover, understand, trust and act on my website?"

Those are fundamentally different optimization objectives.

The next opportunity for marketing leaders

Over the coming months, I'll be sharing insights from my research, and practical recommendations for improving agentic readiness.

My objective isn't to replace existing SEO frameworks.

It's to contribute to an emerging conversation that I believe will become increasingly important as AI agents become mainstream.

If websites were built for search engines during the SEO era, they now need to evolve for AI agents as well.

The marketers who prepare early won't simply rank better.

They'll build digital experiences that both humans and intelligent systems can understand, trust and act upon.

That, in my view, is the next frontier of digital marketing.

What do you think?

I don't believe the industry has all the answers yet. That's precisely why I started this research.

If you're exploring AI search, accessibility, technical SEO, or the emerging Agentic Web, I'd genuinely welcome your feedback on the framework and the findings. Thoughtful discussion will make the research—and the framework—stronger.

This article is the first in a research series exploring the future of Agentic Web Optimization from a marketing perspective.

I'd love to hear how you're preparing your organization for the Agentic Web.
